A Haole in Hawaii?
Hello, my name is Kenneth (or Keneke in Hawaiian). I live in the state of Hawaii or more specifially, the island of Oahu. I am part Hawaiian but no, I am not considered a “local”.
I grew up and lived most of my life in California and didn’t move to Hawaii untill 2007. So, since I wasn’t born in Hawaii I’m…haole? Hapa haole? Hapa kanaka?
My wife, whom I met on MySpace, is from the Philippines so…she’s a haole also? My son was born in Honolulu so he’s definitely a “local”!
Small Kine Genealogy
My great-grandparents were from the Philippines (island of Visayas) and emigrated to Kauai working on sugar plantations. Yes, I thought Nanay and Tatay were their real names :-/
My grandparents are from Kauai but moved to Honolulu in the early 1940’s. They were actually walking, along Honolulu Harbor, when Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941 (Grandma was eight months pregnant).
My grandparents traveled back to Kauai, after the Japanese attack, where my father, Sonny, was born in Kaloa. My dad grew up in Makaha, on Oahu’s leeward coast, graduating from Waianae High School in 1960.
He soon developed “island fever” and left for California…I was born in San Jose and the rest is history…
